NIE HONOURS E.W. BARKER’S LIFE IN PAGES; LAUNCH OF E.W. BARKER BURSARY

To commemorate the legacy of Mr E.W. Barker, the Barker family and the Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS) Academic Group will be launching a commemorative book to reflect past achievements and efforts for the future.

The E.W. Barker Commemorative Book provides readers with the significant milestones in Mr. Barker’s life. It inspires readers to see how one person’s dedication to sports can have an enduring impact on the development and advancement of sports in Singapore.

The book chronicles the collective impact of the professorship, scholarship and provides useful insights into the sports environment in Singapore, through the ‘lenses’ of the ten former E.W. Barker professors and past scholarship holders. We will also be celebrating the book launch together with eight Sport Science and Management (SSM) students who are the recipients of the 2019, 2020 and 2021 E.W Barker Scholarship Awards (Please refer to Annex B for the list of scholarship award winners).

The book launch is also a timely and meaningful occasion to mark the introduction of the E.W. Barker Bursary. The E.W. Barker Bursary is introduced with the aim of nurturing talented and committed individuals in the pursuit of their undergraduate study in the areas of sport management and sport and exercise science.

When asked on the launch of the commemorate book, Associate Professor Koh Koon Teck, Head of PESS shared that “We hope this book will inspire readers to see how one person’s dedication can have a lasting legacy and impact on sports development and advancement in Singapore. It will also give readers insight into the E.W. Barker Professors’ contributions and Singapore’s current and future sports and PE scenes, as well as reading about E.W. Barker Scholarship holders’ contributions to the development of sports and PE in Singapore, despite their diverse backgrounds and interests.”
